Spotted: A Chambray Shirt in Zurich

Hi everyone!

Hope you are all having a good week. I am personally super busy right now to develop the website for my personal style consulting services. So busy that I have to remind myself to be disciplined and write something new for my dear readers.

So here you go! Today, I picked a garment that has had a bit of a resurgence recently: the chambray shirt.

You might have seen it in your favourite magazine and thought: “Oh! Denim shirts are back!” (see an example from GLAMOUR here). But, in fact, denim and chambray are not the same thing. Okay, both are made by weaving white cotton yarn through indigo dyed cotton yarn, so they are fairly similar. However, they differ fundamentally in their weaving techniques.

Denim is diagonally woven (check out the inside of your denim jeans and you’ll see!), while chambray is plainly woven. The diagonal weave of denim produces an overall denser and more rigid material, while chambray is much lighter and softer on the skin.

But, just because you are landlocked, doesn’t mean you cannot pull off a nautical print in the city or even at work. The style is characterized by horizontal stripes, rope or anchor prints (usually navy, black or red) and crisp white skirts and pants. It is not only for the casually dressed, there are just a about a millions of chic and even egdy looks you can create with these ingredients.

Since all the characteristic colors are cool, this is definitely a look more suited for ladies with cool skin, hair and eye color. Combine with silver jewelry for maximum impact.

In case your colors are warm, I would advise you to stay away from the crisp white and do ivory instead. Navy, black and true red are neutrals, so you can go for that. In fact, I do think navy can look really great combined with accessories in gold, tan or warm brown (see Look 2 of your 3 Ways To Wear Nautical Print).

As some of you have seen on my Facebook page, I was helping my friend Carolina Caruso in styling her fashion shoot (check out her blog for the full sneak peek!). The clothes and accessories were kindly provided by FinforWorld, a new fashion initiative aiming to support emerging designers around the globe.

One of the looks was a classic nautical look that you could wear to any day or night time event by the water: A crisp white top, statement pants with anchor print, silver wedges and a clutch (in snake print, just to say you are actually a city girl!).

While the look was just perfect for the shooting location, I was wondering what else you could do with those anchor print pants in every day life, assuming that most of us do not own a boat and are not members of a yacht club… unfortunately.
