The results are in: Pantone, the global authority on all things colour-related, has recently announced their selection for 2014’s Colour of the Year: PANTONE 18-3224, aka “Radiant Orchid”.
Radiant Orchid “encourages expanded creativity and originality,” says Pantone. When I first looked at the pictures, I have to admit that I was a bit confused. What exactly is Radiant Orchid supposed to be? This muddled colour of purple and pink with grey undertones? Isn’t that… Mauve?
Then I saw this colour swatch and was already a lot happier:
It’s actually a bit brighter than mauve with more pink and violet undertones. At the same time it is a lot lighter than the Colour of the Year in previous years (Emerald in 2013 and Tangerine in 2012), which makes it easier for more people to wear.
Pantone has suggested this as the palette to pair the Radiant Orchid colour with:
As you can see, Radiant Orchid can be prettily paired with Violet, Purple, Pink and Red. It also goes well with more blue-ish tones like Amethyst and Indigo. If you are hesitant to go that colourful, you can always tone down with Grey or Black.
While Radiant Orchid itself is a cool colour, it actually looks quite nice if combined with a light and slightly warm color (like Cream) and gold jewelry!
Admittedly, it was not love at first sight for me. However, the more I look at the colour the prettier I find it. Sometimes you just have to give things a bit more time to realize its full potential, I guess.
Here are your 3 Ways To Wear Radiant Orchid. I picked a pair of suede platform sandals from Jimmy Choo that came the closest to my interpration of the Radiant Orchid colour. Let me know what you think in the comments!
